“Love”

A Poem for Valentine’s

Savannah Calvao, Freshman ‘28

You’ve heard it all before,

Fiery embers and warm afternoons

Of romance and sorrow

Like the calls of the loon.

They call love ineffable,

Yet have used galaxies of words to describe it.

You’d think with so many words

That we’d figured it out by now.

Truth is,

We haven’t.

Not as far as I’m concerned.

Everyone’s love is a different love.

Some like little gestures,

Some prefer when lovers go all out.

Others like cuddling,

Others do not.

A picnic at the beach sounds good,

Some adore a cabin in the woods,

Some lounging on the couch and giggling over sitcoms

Or playing video games.

There’s no right way to do it

Or a wrong way really.

Only wrong things to feel.

Love should not hurt.

Loss of love can,

But love should not hurt.

Other than that,

The worlds your oyster, so to say!

People get stuck on finding a solid definition of love,

I think love is better to be felt than defined,

To be embraced rather than criticized.

I find people forget on Valentine’s Day this very special thing about love;

Love does not have to be romantic!

Think of all the friends who treasure your company,

All the family members who smile the second you enter the room.

Even all your pets' joy!

Valentine's Day is not one day to be lonely.

Someone loves you.

Even if they don’t,

I do.

Make the most out of Valentine’s day,
Embrace your loved ones.

Even if the only one happens to be an animal.
