“Should Artificial Intelligence be Incorporated into and Used in Schools?”
Increasingly over the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has evolved drastically. This evolution has made AI even more relevant and useful in our daily lives. Today, public chat bots such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini can offer comprehensive responses or summaries to nearly any prompt, and it can collect research from a multitude of sites within seconds. The advancement of AI has also led to its involvement in the educational aspect of students’ lives. From Photomath to Grammarly, students all over America are familiar with AI tools that are aimed at aiding in their education. However, many of these tools are not permitted in schools. Are the benefits of artificial intelligence being overlooked, or do schools have a valid reason to keep AI banned? For insight, two students from Bishop Stang High School were asked their opinion on whether or not artificial intelligence should be integrated into schools.
No - Whitney Thenor, Grade 9
AI is growing at such a rapid rate. If we allow AI in school, the privilege will likely be abused. For example, some might think it would help teachers grade quicker, however AI is not 100 percent accurate. What if it generates an incorrect test grade for someone? Their grade could significantly fall, which I believe is extremely unfair. Reinforcing academic honesty in school and showing the consequences can help prevent some kids and teens from using AI in their work.
Yes - Parker Aldrich, Grade 9
Artificial Intelligence should be incorporated into schools, but it should be used with limits. Although many people see Artificial Intelligence as a problem with cheating on essays and other work, it can be used as a tool as well. For certain research assignments, AI can be useful for gathering information as long as it is cited correctly. For example, when a student is researching a topic, they can use AI to brainstorm ideas or learn more about a topic before incorporating them into their work. As previously mentioned, many people think that AI can only be used for cheating and stealing the work of other people, but this is not always the case. As long as writing and ideas are not stolen, AI should be incorporated into some aspects of schoolwork. It can be an effective tool for gathering information as long as it is not directly copied and pasted into the student's work.
